Sunrise Lake Estates Drainage (SLED)
PROJECT UPDATE
August 15, 2011
As you have noticed work is proceeding on the Sunrise Lake Estates Drainage Project. It started the first week of July with a concentration on installing driveway and roadway culverts, removing brush, roughing in ditches and installing headwalls. Most of this work is completed except for Dudley Drive and Lincoln Road. This will begin soon. Once all the roughing is complete then BBD will begin to finish the ditches with a loam, matting and seeding. This means most new ditches will be grass. Stone gravel will only utilized for protection of bulkheads, spillways and for protected inlets. The finishing of driveways will be the last task to occur including those needing repaving.
Some have expressed concerns about the water lines of Pennichuck Water including the Town. The Town has always had a concern about the exposure of the water lines that would occur once the new ditching was installed. The Town, BBD and WMS have been working closely with Pennichuck to insure the integrity of the system during and after the project.
During our recent on-site meeting on Thursday, August 11, 2011 with Pennichuck’s Chief Engineer a plan was developed to ensure the water system’s integrity. The plan includes Pennichuck upgrading almost the entire main water line system by the end of the year.
Most of Pennichuck’s main water lines lie within our ditches at a depth of 2½’ to 3’. After the new drainage is installed some lines would have as little as 6” cover, which is unacceptable. Pennichuck’s upgrade would include installation of new main water lines and valves down the center side of the road at the depth of about 5’ and would include reconnection to each residential property. The installation would require them to cut through some of the new ditches during the reconnection. However, they will return them to their original form and no harm would occur to our new drainage system. A design and time schedule is now being developed. Construction will most likely begin mid September and completed later in the year. Therefore, the Sunrise Lake Estates could be in a construction mode through November.
The Town requested that Pennichuck begin their water line construction on Dudley Drive and Nicola Road first because it still plans to repave it and paving is usually not done after the end of October due to cold weather. Therefore, paving has yet been firmed up but will be done by the end of October. Completion of all other drainage work is now expected to be completed by the second week of September.
